5 Rebellious Ways to Reframe Sobriety

Writer: Andrea ShawAndrea Shaw

Last Spring, my son interviewed me for his final 8th grade school project.

Throughout the year he’s been studying “free thinkers” (a topic he chose) and the final project was to interview someone in his life who fits the description.

As you can imagine, I was honored and proud!

When I started down my sober path, I was quite literally the ONLY person in my group of friends or family that didn’t drink.

The. Only. One.

As you can imagine, quitting alcohol took a level of personal power I never knew I had.

Doing ANYTHING that defies the norm takes a TON of courage. Resisting the majority will always “other” you. Even though you know your choice is right for you, it can be scary as hell!

But what happens when we REFRAME this thinking? With a few minor tweaks we can modify this belief and see it in a different way.

5 REBELLIOUS ways to reframe the way you look at sobriety:

1.) Instead of viewing yourself as alone, you see yourself as ORIGINAL? DARING? RARE?

2.) Instead of feeling like you must answer the question: “Why don’t you drink?”, flip it around and answer with, “Why DO you?” or "Because I don't need to."

3.) Instead of worrying what other people think, become unapologetic.

4.) Instead of grabbing a bottle of water at the party, bring an alcohol-free cocktail of your choice.

5.) Instead of saying goodbye to the “uninhibited” version of yourself, step into the most FREE expression of yourself!

I’ll admit, this might take some practice. We are conditioned to believe that drinking is the standard.

But sobriety is the rebellious choice. It’s the bold option in an alcohol-centric world.

YOU can be the distinctive woman in your circle. YOU can make the rebellious choice of a free-thinker.

I know you can.

xx Andrea
