3 Ways to Take Control of Your Drinking Habits

I've been thinking...

Over the years, I've used many words to describe my choice to stop drinking alcohol.

I use “sober” most often because to me, it feels most aligned. It makes me feel proud, rebellious and resilient. It’s the one that’s stood the test of time. Someone once asked me, “Why do you use the word ‘sober’? Can’t you just say you don’t drink anymore?”

Here’s what I realized in that moment: My sobriety made THEM feel uncomfortable. Here’s the thing friends, you get to call yourself and identify with whatever feels good for YOU!

ANY, ALL or NONE of the words are YOUR choice. The best advice I can give you is to OWN IT.

Own your powerful choice with pride, and choose the language that represents you best. You do not have to shrink to fit anyone’s labels - including your own. Once you start taking control of your drinking habits, you set the stage for more freedom, more clarity and more authenticity.

3 Ways to take control of your drinking habits:

1. Write out your "Why"

  • Write in a journal, or in the Notes section of your phone. List all the reasons you desire an alcohol-free life. Keep it handy in case you need to refer back (especially helpful when a craving strikes!)

2. Create an "instead of" list

  • Think of things you can do INSTEAD of drinking. Clearing out a closet? Going for a walk with your kids? Taking a yoga class? Coloring or knitting? What can you do to fill up the space you create by not drinking?

3. Connect with yourself.

  • When we lean on alcohol, one of the biggest things we are missing is connection. Specifically, a connection with oneself. Find ways to honor yourself as you move through this process. My favorites are: prayer, journaling, and solo walks in nature.

Which one of these resonates most with you? Is there one of these things that you'd be willing to try on today? Taking action is the first step in changing unwanted patterns.

Remember: small steps = lasting change.

See you next time!

xx Andrea
